Take our quick screen to see whether you, or a mate is at
risk from Bowel Cancer.
Here’s a handy list of things to watch out for, which increase your risk of developing bowel cancer.
- Age.
Bowel cancer is rare under the age of 40, but after this, the risk increases as a person gets older, especially after the age of 50.
- Family risk.
Having a close relative – mother, father, sister, brother or child – with bowel cancer increases the risk by two or three times. The more relatives with the condition, the higher the risk. It's worth noting though, that in about 80 per cent of cases there's no history of bowel cancer in the family.
- Low-fibre diet.
Bowel cancer is more common in people with a low amount of fibre and a high amount of red meat and fat in their diet.
- Colitis.
People with inflammatory bowel conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease have an increasing risk of bowel cancer the longer they have the condition.
- Behavioural and lifestyle factors.
An inactive lifestyle, obesity and smoking all increase the risk of bowel cancer.
